As our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this moment invites reflection on the founding promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and whether we are truly living up to it. While America has shaped history in remarkable ways, our commitment to protecting life has weakened, especially when it comes to abortion.

Today, abortion is broadly accepted culturally and legally, including in Michigan where it is permitted throughout pregnancy and most safety regulations for women have been eliminated. Chemical abortions now account for the majority of procedures, despite growing evidence of serious medical risks, raising concerns about women’s health and the value placed on the most vulnerable human lives.

Despite these challenges, there is a clear path forward. Progress requires reshaping culture, engaging honestly with those who disagree, focusing on supporting women with real compassion and practical help, and renewing participation in the political process so public policy reflects the value of human life.
