Danny’s Desk: Power In Community

Fall is my personal favorite season. The beautiful changing leaves, the colder temperatures, and pumpkin flavored everything are right around the corner in Michigan. Fall also ushers in football season, fun holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving, and, most importantly, many important events for Right to Life of Michigan!

We have our 52nd Annual State Conference on September 25, the Second Michigan March for Life on November 6 (register here!), and many Focus on Life Benefit Dinners hosted by our statewide affiliates (see more info below).

All of these events are held to gather pro-life advocates as a community to discuss the ever important need to help vulnerable women, children, and those targeted by assisted suicide. We join together as a collective unit to pursue the common goal of presenting the means to choose life to those who need it. This concept of being a “community” has always been important in my mind.

Communities look out for each other and work to keep all of its members safe. This idea is critical to the pro-life cause. For example, in Michigan, there is no longer an informed consent and 24-hour waiting period law. Women do not need to be told of the possible side effects of abortion before receiving one and do not need to wait 24 hours to decide on this life-altering decision. A recent study published in the Journal of Scientific Research found that women who undergo an abortion had a higher hospitalization rate for mental, psychiatric, and substance abuse disorders and suicide attempts than women who chose life. It is so important that we rally as a pro-life community to ensure women know the risks before making this important decision.

We have all been a part of different communities in our lives, whether that was a school community, church group, or simply our everyday coworkers. The closer that members of these groups are, the greater impact they can have for others. The same goes for the pro-life community. The closer we join together in this important cause, the more effectively we can reach women and vulnerable groups with a hopeful and life-affirming message.

I encourage you to get involved with Right to Life of Michigan in whatever capacity works best for you, whether that is finding time to volunteer or attending one of our great fall events. The stronger we can stand together, the more we can help those who need it.
